Health for a Change: Understanding Genetic Counseling in Cancer Care

Genetic counseling plays an important role in identifying cancer risk and helping patients and families make informed decisions about their care. In this webinar, we’ll explore what genetic counselors do, when someone should consider genetic testing, and how community-based professionals and healthcare providers can talk about these services in clear, supportive ways. Through real-world case examples, we’ll highlight the value of genetic counseling in oncology, including ethical considerations and common misconceptions. Participants will leave with practical tools to help connect individuals and families across Kentucky to appropriate genetic counseling resources.

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Understand what genetic counselors do and what typically happens during a genetic counseling session, especially in the context of cancer care.

  • Recognize when someone might benefit from genetic counseling or genetic testing, including key personal and family history indicators.

  • Feel more confident starting conversations about genetic risk, using clear, supportive language that meets people where they are.
